Windows Administrative Support – Nick Burns is a Jerk Brunswick, Ohio

If you don’t know who that is, google it — it’s from an SNL skit. And do you want to know why he’s a jerk? He lacks empathy, he’s insecure about what he knows, and he lacks the heart of a teacher — to put it bluntly, he just doesn’t care about people.

Frankly, computers suck half the time, and wouldn’t it be nice if there were people out there who actually cared enough about you to help you fix your problem? Not to just put a bandaid on it, but actually fix the problem for good — or, better yet, teach you how to do it better next time?

We’re Addo Solutions, and that’s exactly what we do — we make computers suck less for real people.

Addo Solutions is actively disrupting a closed market that puts short-term profits over people by providing truly excellent technology management services — even when nobody is looking. We provide hope to organizations and leaders who believe that there is nothing they can do, we educate those leaders to understand the strategy, and we handle the critical underlying infrastructure.

For 15 years we have been providing excellence-centered IT management services to companies throughout Northeast Ohio and the US as a whole — but the job is far from over.

So what does that look like? We do things a little differently when it comes to supporting our customers, and it looks like this:

  1. Layer 1 support usually sucks. You normally get someone who has no experience and doesn’t care, and anything they do usually makes things worse. That’s why we skip layer 1 and get right to someone who can actually work on a real fix.
  2. We teach and empower users to solve their own problems. This is ALWAYS slower upfront, but provides a much more cost-effective solution long-term. The good news for you is that you get to walk into that culture with already established, trained customers.
  3. To that end, we are always looking at the long-term win, and the fact is we are winning. We have never done any marketing because we don’t have to – we do a great job, and our customers do the sales for us.

That last point is why you are reading this. The fact is, we are doing a really good job, and we need some more help doing a great job.

So how do you know if you will fit in? Well there’s a few things that Mr. Burns highlights for us that will help you rule yourself out:

  1. If you don’t really care about people, you won’t fit in. We serve people here.
  2. If you have a problem with cops, no hard feelings, but this isn’t for you.
  3. On that subject, if you won’t pass a very thorough background check then you won’t make it in the door. We care about our customers greatly, so we dig deep. Lots of us have done dumb stuff, but just know we’re gonna know, so be upfront about it.
  4. If you can’t explain why printers suck, you probably don’t have enough experience.
  5. If you are comfortable with where your skills are, that’s okay, but this probably won’t work out. We are avid students who are always looking for those TIL moments. Failure means you learned something!
  6. If you are unwilling or uninterested in teaching folks how to do computers better, you will struggle here.
  7. We script… everything. If it can be automated, we automate it. If you can automate (BAT, PS1, Bash, etc.) that’s a big plus, but you should be ready to learn how to do it either way.
  8. We strive to stay organized. Stuff happens — get the job done — but staying organized is really important to make sure we aren’t tripping over ourselves, or each other. If you are kind of a slob, again, you seem cool, but that’s not really what we’re going for.
  9. If you haven’t rm -rf / (wiped the wrong partition, deleted the wrong database, etc.) for a production system and had that unforgettable, warm sensation come over you as you realize what you just did, you probably don’t have the experience we need.
  10. Lastly, if you are someone who is looking for a j.o.b. – again, that’s sweet, but you won’t fit in. That isn’t code for “we have Lumburg ready to pounce” (again, if you don’t know, Google it) — it means when you’re at work, you are there to work. No offense, but we’d rather be with our families than the office, so let’s get our crap done and go home early, or otherwise do something fun. But sitting around the office death-scrolling Facebook or Reddit is really dumb. If this sounds crazy to you, then you probably aren’t gonna like working here.

That’s a big list, but if that sounds like the kind of place you want to work, then that’s probably going to be your biggest filter. That said, let’s see if we can weed you out a little more.

Technical Skills

We are looking for a specific set of skills. You don’t need to be an expert at all of this, but you are going to need to have a pretty good idea of what’s going on. For the record, “I took a class once in X” doesn’t count as experience. At least a few years doing it in relatively regular daily life is experienced. “Seasoned” is 10 years of doing it a lot. Don’t let that dissuade you from applying — it’s okay — but just be realistic about your experience.

Frankly, we have one of the best technical stacks of anyone I am aware of, and the reason for that is we’re open to changing it based on what’s best — not just what’s cheapest or easiest to do right now.

  • Windows Skills
    • Active Directory inside and out
    • Group Policy, all its ugly quirks and warts
    • Printers, print spoolers, printer ports, and print drivers
    • Device management, drivers, etc.
    • Know your way around the windows registry
    • Powershell (functional experience with this is a plus for all of us — it helps with pretty much everything)
    • Azure AD Sync
  • “Cloud” Skills
    • Azure AD (Entra or whatever they are calling it now with their 100th interface redesign and broken links)
      • Applications
      • Security Rules
    • Exchange Online
    • Security Center
    • Powershell Commandlets
  • VOIP
    • Basic VOIP experience is a big win
    • Some experience with Cisco Call manager is a big plus but not 100% needed
  • Networking
    • You will need to know the OSI stack pretty well. It’s not that hard to learn, but if you don’t know this now, even if you don’t get the job, go learn it. Make it become one with your person. You will be an infinitely better tech because of it.
    • PaloAlto experience is huge plus
    • Cisco CLI interface is a big plus
    • UBNT experience is a big plus

In your resume, highlight the stuff you rock at, and be honest about what you suck at.
